Growing number of researchers studying religiosity and health.
The Washington Post (12/6, B7, Boorstein) reported, "To critics, the few dozen researchers who met this week for a Washington conference" on religiosity "are part of an ideological crusade, a modern-day sham meant to infect science with religious belief." But, "to participants, they are studying what they say is becoming increasingly obvious: the link between a person's religion or spirituality and their health." This conference "represented the growth of a research field that has existed on a small scale for decades, but has expanded significantly in the past few years. The researchers include psychologists, sociologists, philosophers, statisticians, and others who believe being religious or spiritual has health benefits." Still, opponents of this field of research charge that "empirical proof linking religiosity and health is weak," and "say it is ethically dangerous for physicians to ask personal questions about faith because it could lead to evangelizing."

An annual physical is very important for young adults and the SHC typically dedicates half-hour or full hour appointments to discuss the importance of an annual pap smear and the implications of what it detects. The SHC can also provide complete STD screening to female students. Please call the SHC for complete information on all available tests and pricing.
Screening for sexually transmitted infections is very important both to prevent complications in the infected person and to prevent spread of infection to others. Both individuals with a specific STI as well as those having sexual contact with a person known or suspected of having a specific STI are at increased risk of exposure to other STIs. The following is a list of STIs for which screening tests are available at the SHC:
The SHC offers a free confidential HIV testing clinic twice during the school year. This test is performed by the staff Registered Nurse and offers the students both pre-and post-test counseling. Watch for campus announcements or call the Student Health Center for upcoming free testing dates.
The SHC has a small formulary for many common diagnoses and antiobiotics for common respiratory and sinus illnesses.
The Eating Disorder Team is a triad that works with the Health, Counseling and Nutrition professionals on campus. Students interested in learning more about this problem may contact a member from the Health (x4316) or Counseling Team (x4210).
The SHC can perform all the same labwork that a student's typical private medical doctor can perform. Results can usually be made available within 24 hours. Some labwork may take slightly longer depending on the test ran takes longer.
Students may receive medical advice and referrals to specialized care upon a doctor's visit here at the SHC. If a student is insured by the University program, Aetna, they will need to see a doctor here first before receiving a referral to a specialist for their particular healthcare needs.

The SHC in-house dispensary includes many of the medications that our population typically requires. You can charge your student account for the medications. If you have a prescription card from your insurance program with pharmacy co-pay, then going to the pharmacy will save you money.
