The following telecommunications services are in use at Pepperdine. Contact the IT Help Desk with questions and needs.
DSL – Digital Subscriber Line permits an ordinary telephone line to provide digital communication without interfering with voice services. DSL is the principal competition of cable modems for providing high speed Internet access to home consumers. Faculty and staff living in Malibu lower campus residences may subscribe to DSL.
Electronic Mail – Pepperdine students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends use various programs to compose, send, and receive electronic mail (e-mail) messages inside and outside the University.
Network Services – Pepperdine offers both wired and wireless means for students, faculty, and staff to connect their computers, printers, and other electronic devices to the University’s local area network (LAN, on a campus) and wide area network (WAN, between campuses). There are various services available to those who connect to the Pepperdine network, including access to the Internet.
Podcasting/Vodcasting – This is a Web feed of audio (podcast) or video (vodcast) files that are placed on the Internet for anyone to download. It is possible to download the files directly from the Web site; however, special programs called podcatchers exist that let users subscribe to podcasts for automatic download and storage of the media files for later playback.
RSS – Really Simple Syndication (RSS) allows Internet users to subscribe to Web sites that have provided RSS feeds; these are typically sites that change or add content regularly. Content is usually presented in a list of articles, giving a line or two of each article and a link to the full article or post. Unlike subscriptions to many printed newspapers and magazines, most RSS subscriptions are free.
Teleconferencing – Teleconferencing is the live exchange of information among persons and machines remote from one another but linked by a telecommunications system. The telecommunications system may support the teleconference by providing audio, video, and data services by one or more means, such as telephone, radio, and television. Conference calls are means of teleconferencing.
Telephone and Voice Services – Pepperdine students, faculty, and staff use both cell phones and regular “land line” telephones. The University voice mail system is integrated with its e-mail system, allowing users to listen to voice messages by telephone or through their Microsoft Outlook e-mail program. This is known as a unified messaging system. Quality of service for programs like Skype cannot be guaranteed.
Television – Students, faculty, and staff living in Malibu campus residences may contract with Charter Cable Company for cable TV services. Pepperdine also has its own student-run television station (TV-26) with studios located in the Center for Communications and Business (CCB) building.
Videoconferencing - A videoconference (also known as a videoteleconference) is a set of interactive telecommunication technologies which allow two or more locations to interact via two-way video and audio transmissions simultaneously. Videoconferencing is a specific type of teleconferencing.
