Forwarding Pepperdine Student E-mail to Another E-mail Account Using a Rule in Outlook Web Access (OWA)
(A better way to forward your @pepperdine.edu email to an external email account is by using e-mail redirection.)
Pepperdine e-mail messages are sent to your Pepperdine e-mail mailbox, which you can access from any computer that is connected to the Internet by using the Internet Explorer (IE) browser and the program called Outlook Web Access, a.k.a. OWA or Webmail (http://webmail.pepperdine.edu).
Pepperdine student e-mail users, who have another e-mail account outside the University, can forward their Pepperdine e-mail messages to that outside account if they want, so they do not miss any important messages.
To set up e-mail forwarding using Webmail, students should go into Webmail and create a rule following the steps shown below.
- Open Internet Explorer. (In Firefox, you cannot see the Rules option.)
(Also to do this requires a Windows computer.)
- Log into Webmail. (In the Domain\user name field, type "student" for students or "pepperdine" for faculty/staff; then a back slash, followed by your Network ID. In the Password field, type your Network password. Then press the Enter key.)
- Select Rules from the Button Bar at the bottom left side of the OWA screen.
- Select the New option from the Rules menu bar.
- Enter a name for your Rule.
- Select Forward it to; and enter the e-mail address of the account to which you want to forward messages.
NOTE: If you want to forward messages to another Pepperdine e-mail address, select the address from the Global Address List by clicking on the book icon. (It won't work if you use the format a.person@pepperdine.edu.)
- We recommend removing the check from the box, “Keep a copy in my Inbox.” If you keep it checked, your Pepperdine Inbox could fill up; and you might lose important messages.
- Select Save and Close from the Rules menu bar; then OK to approve the new message.

NOTE: Always select Save and Close to save your work, even after you have deleted a rule.
- Test that your mail forwarding works by sending an e-mail message to your Pepperdine e-mail address; then close OWA.
- When you are finished using Web mail, please do not forget to click the Log Off button at the top right side of the Outlook window.
- Close the Web browser.
It is important that you regularly check your non-Pepperdine e-mail account, because it can cause problems if mail is rejected from that address, that is, if the Inbox is full.
It is also important that you regularly check your Pepperdine e-mail account because all forwarded e-mail messages are placed into the deleted items folder, which is still a part of your Pepperdine mailbox. And when your Pepperdine mailbox fills up, you will no longer be able to send or receive new mail.
Pepperdine can take no responsibility for the functioning of external mail services, and cannot guarantee that forwarded mail will reach an external service.
