Office of Institutional Effectiveness

MISSION STATEMENT:

The Office of Institutional Effectiveness (OIE) is a research engine designed to advance the mission and values of Pepperdine University by facilitating evidence-based decisions and a culture of assessment.

The mission will be achieved through:
  • Functioning as a semi-independent research group and think tank.
  • Collecting, analyzing, and distributing high quality research.
  • Coordinating a comprehensive system of Program Reviews that contribute to the mission and strategic goals of the University and all five schools.
  • Providing guidance and data support for the University assessment cycle, Institutional Educational Objectives, and learning outcomes.
  • Consulting with departments, programs, and schools from start to finish on research projects to ensure legitimacy and rigor of data.
  • Guiding and facilitating the process of reaffirmation of accreditation.
  • Closing the assessment loop by facilitating the use of research to make informed resource allocation and policy decisions.

Lisa Bortman, Ph.D.

Assistant Provost for Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness

Lisa Bortman joined Pepperdine University in 2011 as the Assistant Provost for the Office of Institutional Effectiveness. From 2006 to 2011, Lisa Bortman served as the Associate Academic Dean and Director of First Year Programs, Advising and Academic Assessment at Whittier College. Lisa was also the campus coordinator of the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship, a national grant that supports under-represented students in their pursuit of doctoral education. Lisa’s research focuses on academic practices that lead to first- and second-year student success, with a special interest in academic engagement and faculty-student relationships. In 2006, her research was recognized by the National Association of Academic Advising (NACADA). In 2009, Lisa was honored as Outstanding First-Year Student Advocate of the Year by the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition. Lisa worked for many years as a faculty member and as Dean of Allied Health Professions at Lasell College (Newton, MA). She also served as an Educational Consultant and Assessment Expert for the American Physical Therapy Association (1997-2003). In 2006, Lisa earned an ED.D from the University of Massachusetts (Boston), a doctoral program that specializes in preparing leaders in higher education who are committed to fostering, facilitating, and managing change in diverse settings. Lisa earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Bridgewater State College and a Bachelor of Science degree from Northeastern University in Boston.

M. Teresa Taningco Kaldor, Ph.D.

Director of Educational Research

Teresa has worked on education policy for almost 10 years, in the US, Qatar and the Philippines. She earned her Ph.D. in Policy Analysis from the Pardee RAND Graduate School in 2006. She did her post-doctoral work at the Tomas Rivera Policy Institute of the University of Southern California. Aside from two master’s degrees in Industrial Economics and Policy Analysis, Teresa did post-masteral studies at the Kiel Institute of World Economics in Germany. She has extensive work experience on macroeconomics as well. As Director of Educational Research, Teresa analyzes data using quantitative and qualitative tools, writes up the results and presents it to various clients and constituents around Pepperdine University. The objective of her work is to enable decision-making at Pepperdine, based on evidence and rigorous technical analysis.

Lily Pang

Director of Institutional Research

Lily Pang, Director of Institutional Research, is a Pepperdine alumna with a B.S. degree in Business Administration and an MBA with emphasis in programming and quantitative analysis. Her previous work experience include managing computer labs, teaching technology classes, and consulting doctoral students on data analysis using SPSS. She supports the university’s accreditation and program review process. She also directs the institutional research projects and collaborates with IT staff to create data warehouse portfolios.

Christine Tsui

Data Analyst/Office Manager

Christine serves as the Office Manager and Data Analyst in the Office of Institutional Effectiveness of Pepperdine University. She has a B.A. in Management and a B.S. in Accounting. Prior to joining Pepperdine, Christine was employed as an accountant for Procter & Gamble and Guitar Center Inc. in the U.S. She has also worked in the areas of budgeting, business administration and marketing in multi-national corporations such as Philips and Canon in Hong Kong. She is eager to apply her management and analytical skills to support the Office of Institutional Effectiveness in fulfilling its missions. She is responsible for the smooth operation of the office as well as data analysis to support university strategic planning, decision-making, accreditation, and national rankings. Her tasks also include completing surveys and consulting with other university departments to ensure the validity of data. She contributes to the office’s goals of facilitating high quality research as she aids the directors in their assessments.

Dianne Asis

Lead Application Developer

Dianne Asis works at Pepperdine University as a Lead Application Developer on the Malibu Campus. As one of the first President's Scholars at California State University, Long Beach, she received a full academic scholarship and earned her B.S. in Computer Science. Since 1999, she has also worked in the wireless, security, ticket resale, food, and social networking industries. Her previous jobs included building a customized sandwich portion control software, testing Symantec’s subscription renewal entitlement backend infrastructure, building multiple software QA engineering departments from the ground up, managing up to two-dozen direct reports via onsite and satellite offices, and re-writing MySpace’s spam and abuse detection system. In her current role, Dianne develops OIE’s customized website and database in ASP.NET, AJAX, C#, and SQL, creates customized dashboards and charts for the provost and deans, works with top researchers of the university to successfully earn Pepperdine’s accreditation, and provides a mechanism of presenting collected data and research in a seamless way to help the major stakeholders of the university make evidence-based decisions to advance the mission of the university.
