UCLA HERI (Higher Education Research Institute)

CIRP Freshman Survey

The Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) Freshman Survey is administered by the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) at UCLA. Pepperdine first-year students who enroll in the first-year seminars during the Fall semester are asked to complete the CIRP Freshmen Survey. The CIRP Freshman Survey is designed to provide comprehensive information on the incoming first-year students. It is used in conjunction with the Your First College Year Survey (YFCY) and the College Senior Survey (CSS), which provide valuable baseline data for a longitudinal assessment. The results provide information about readiness for college, how students choose colleges, student values and beliefs about diversity and civic engagement, and student expectations.

CIRP College Senior Survey (CSS)

Developed by the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI), the College Senior Survey (CSS) is administered through the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP). Pepperdine senior students participate in the CSS in the Spring semester. Used in conjunction with the CIRP Freshman Survey, the CSS generates valuable longitudinal data on students' cognitive and affective growth during college. It examines the impact of service-learning, leadership development, and student-faculty interactions, as well as assesses a wide variety of instructional practices. The results provide powerful information on how to improve the educational experience for all students.

HERI Faculty Survey

The HERI Faculty Survey is designed to measure the timely issues impacting faculty and administrators today. Pepperdine Faculty participate in this survey once every three years. Results from the HERI Faculty Survey are particularly useful in discussions about pedagogy, and how it relates to students’ experience on campus. Pepperdine utilizes the HERI Faculty Survey results to provide a faculty perspective on planning and policy analysis, enhance faculty development programming, and improve the student learning experience.

College Students' Beliefs and Values (CSBV) Survey

The purpose of the study is to examine the spiritual growth of college students during their college years to identify trends, patterns and principles of spirituality and religiousness among students. Pepperdine University carries out the CSBV survey for both freshmen and senior students.

Indiana University National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)

National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)

Pepperdine University freshmen and senior students are invited to participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). The purpose of this survey is to obtain information about student participation in programs and activities provided for their learning and personal development. NSSE survey results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from their experiences as well as their views about the quality of their education. The NSSE fits perfectly with Pepperdine's efforts to continually assess and improve the undergraduate experience for all its students.

Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE)

The FSSE is designed to measure faculty expectations of student engagement in educational practices. It evaluates how faculty members perceive the level of effective student engagement. The survey also collects information about how faculty members spend their time related to professorial activities and the kinds of learning experiences their institution emphasizes.
