Purpose of the Convocation Series

The Convocation Series is dedicated to help Pepperdine students build Christian faith, affirm Christian values, and address the moral and ethical dimensions of current issues.

Description

From its beginning, Pepperdine has included regular assemblies where students gather to worship, hear engaging speakers encourage and challenge them with God’s word, and learn more about how they can make a difference in this world. Chapel and convocation programs are the contemporary connection to this integral aspect of Pepperdine’s Christian mission. All Seaver undergraduate students are required to attend the equivalent of one chapel/convocation program each week. Attendance at recognized chapel/convocation programs counts toward a grade in which students receive one half unit of academic credit each semester.

Different Opportunities to Grow Your Faith

There are over 150 different opportunities each semester to fulfill the attendance requirement. Events range in size from a large assembly to one-on-one meetings:

  1. Wednesday Morning Chapel – This program takes place at 10 a.m. in Firestone Fieldhouse with around 1,200 students in attendance. Programs feature a time of worship including singing, prayer, and either a speaker or presentation from a Christian faith perspective.

  2. Ongoing Chapels and Special Events – These medium-sized programs (50-400 students) include Celebration Chapel which features a time of student-led worship, language chapels in Spanish, French, Italian, and German, and other programs sponsored by various departments and organizations on campus.

  3. Club Convo Program – This program is made up of about 20 different small groups that have been approved by our office.  These small groups of students (usually 10-12) are led by a faculty or staff member on a host of topics presented from a Christian faith perspective that aim to deepen students' relationship with Christ or understanding of Christianity, build their relationships with others, and develop a strong connection between their faith and future career.

  4. Spiritual Mentoring Program – Students can request to be paired with a faculty or staff member to complete four sessions of mentoring-focusing on values, beliefs, ethics, and other issues related to the Christian life.
